Durga puja festival in Gurgaon

Durga Puja, also referred to as Durgotsab is an annual Hindu festival celebrated across South Asia. However, this event is most popular among the Bengali community. The festival celebrates the worship of the Hindu Goddess Durga, marking the victory of good over evil. The event lasts for a period of five days beginning from Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Nabami and Bijoya Dashami. Apart from Bengal, Durga Puja is celebrated in all over India mainly by the Bengali communities.

This year, as the Millennium City, Gurgaon hosts its first shopping festival, the theme of Durga Puja gets interweaved into it. The authorities have decided to celebrate the occasion with much pomp and pleasure.

The true colors of the festival will come out during the month long extravaganza. Not only the Bengali Diasporas of NCR but other Indian communities will also get to be a part of this event. This year, the puja will last from 12th to 17th of October. Keeping this in mind, the organizers of the Gurgaon Shopping Festival has planned to host a Durga Puja at the Leisure Valley grounds.

This year is also special in a way as it marks the 150th birth anniversary of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The organizers have decided to amalgamate the two and come up with a gala event. The basic theme of the puja will revolve around Tagore’s haven Shanti Niketan. Since the puja will be dedicated to the famous poet, the Puja Pandal will be based on Tagore’s house in Shanti Niketan.

Various cultural festivals will be held in the span of five days. The programmes will range from dance performances to dhnuchi naach (dancing with smoke) to the sindur khela (smearing vermillion). Every evening will witness a cultural performance which will further enliven the spirit of the festival. All are welcome to enjoy the spirit of Durga Puja to the fullest.
